TPM 2.0 is one of the minimum requirements if you want to install Windows 11 on your PC. Most computers and laptops may already have this hardware, but they disable it since Windows 10 or older doesn’t require this. Hence, in this post, we will guide you on how to enable TPM 2.0 on your Windows PC so that you can upgrade to Windows 11 without any problem.
Let’s dive right in!
What is TPM 2.0?
A TPM is used to increase the protection of your PC. It is a hardware component that can be found in most computers and laptops. It is used to store encryption keys and passwords, which are needed to encrypt and decrypt data on the computer.
The TPM 2.0 is an updated version of this module that has better protection against hackers and other threats. The latest version of Windows 11 comes with support for the TPM 2.0 module so it might be worth upgrading if you are still using Windows 10 or 8.
When you enable TPM 2.0, it will be able to store more encryption keys, which will make it more difficult for hackers to access your data.
If your computer is less than 5 years old, it will likely have TPM 2.0 installed. However, some manufacturers sometimes disable the TPM by default. Thus, you need to check if it’s been enabled or disabled before upgrading to Windows 11.
How to check if the TPM in your computer is enabled or disabled
There are two simple methods to check if the TPM is enabled or disabled:
Method 1: via Microsoft Management Console
1. Open Start and click Run or press Windows key + R at the same time.
2. Type tpm.msc in the dialogue box and click OK.
- If a message says, “Compatible Trusted Platform Module (TPM) cannot be found” appears on your screen, it means the TPM is disabled.
- If the status says, “The TPM is ready for use”, you need to check the Specification Version in the TPM Manufacturer Information section. Make sure that it’s 2.0. If the version is less than 2.0, you cannot install Windows 11 on your computer.
Method 2: via the Windows Security app
1. Navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Device Security
- If you don’t see a Security processor section on the window, it means the TPM is disabled.
- If the Security processor section appears, click Security processor details. Then, verify that the Specification version is 2.0. If the version is less than 2.0, your PC doesn’t meet the requirement to install Windows 11.
